A day to celebrate our university and all who make it so special

"There’s just something special about Indiana University." That was a refrain I heard several times before coming to Indiana. Now, it's something I say to others.

In my time as president, I've had the privilege of visiting every IU campus, taking in their vibrancy, and witnessing firsthand the strengths and invaluable work of our faculty, staff, and researchers. In talking with our students, I've been inspired by their compassion, wisdom, and relentless pursuit of a more just and informed world. IU's alumni, friends, donors, and parents have humbled me with their generosity and support.

The IU spirit I witness each day is why I am excited about tomorrow – IU Day – when we come together as a community and celebrate all that makes our university so special.

IU Day will be celebrated around the world and in countless ways. At IU Fort Wayne, the newest IU mascot will be revealed. In K-12 classrooms throughout the nation, IU-educated teachers will wear their cream and crimson and inspire the next generation of IU students. In Eldoret, Kenya, IU faculty and trainees who work with the global health consortium AMPATH will gather at IU House for cake and a fireside chat about global health leadership. 

I expect we'll also see many acts of kindness and service from the IU family on IU Day. For example, members of the Bali, Indonesia, alumni group led a food drive last year and delivered meals to feed their community. Opportunities to contribute to worthy IU causes will also be offered up on IU Day, such as support for student-nurses, -musicians, and -athletes; scholarships for students in recovery from addiction; and resources for military and veteran students.

On my first IU Day, I'll be wearing cream and crimson, sharing #IUDay on Instagram, connecting with and supporting the IU family, and feeling grateful to be part of this incredible university community. I hope you'll join me.
