Investing in faculty diversity across IU
Now is the time to provide our students with access to world-class teachers and researchers from multiple perspectives. As a university, we have already taken important steps toward greater diversity, and our resolve must now be matched with a significant investment.
Indiana University is taking a critical and bold step forward with a $30 million fund to accelerate our efforts to hire a more diverse community of faculty.
The seven-year Presidential Diversity Hiring Initiative will focus on hiring professors from groups traditionally underrepresented in higher education, with the ambition of increasing representation among faculty.
We are going beyond replacing open roles with this first-of-its-kind investment for the university. Using reallocated funds from non-academic services, as well as external gifts, new faculty positions will be added. The hires will support the academic needs and goals of IU campuses across a broad range of disciplines.
I know many of you will be eager to learn more about this initiative. The IU Office of the Vice President for Diversity, Equity and Multicultural Affairs will manage the effort, providing insight into the process as part of a dedicated webinar in October for those leading faculty hiring on each of our seven campuses.
Together, let's be ambitious in advancing and enriching IU by expanding the diversity of our faculty ranks.
