IU invests $250M to strengthen leadership and impact in biosciences

As part of a commitment rivaling those made by the nation’s leading public and private research universities, Indiana University is investing more than $250 million to accelerate research in biosciences, biomedical engineering, and health and wellness.

One of IU’s largest-ever strategic investments in these key sectors, the effort will establish two pioneering, multidisciplinary research institutes at IU Indianapolis as anchors of the new IU Science and Technology Corridor. With an emphasis on research aimed at improving the health of Hoosiers, the Convergent Bioscience and Technology Institute and the Institute for Human Health and Wellbeing will attract investments, create startup businesses, and accelerate Indiana's vibrant biotech sector. 

This game-changing commitment also includes investing more than $93 million to hire new faculty members in the life sciences on the IU Bloomington campus, advancing the goals of our ambitious Faculty 100 initiative and reinforcing the campus’s longstanding leadership in life sciences teaching and research. With a particular focus on STEM-based facilities, we will also fund major renovations to life sciences research and laboratory space on our Bloomington campus. 

Taken together, these initiatives jump start our commitment to life-changing innovations as part of the bold goals of IU 2030, our strategic plan— the path forward detailed in my annual State of the University address on Monday.  

This is the ambitious path we’ve chosen, and we look to tomorrow with clarity, purpose, and a commitment to stretch the boundaries of knowledge, transform lives, and change our world for the better.
