When students begin their first year of medical school, they dream of "Match Day" — the day at the end of their fourth year of medical school when they find out the medical specialty and location that will be the next step in their training after they graduate.

Indiana University’s future physicians recently gathered in person with faculty, family and friends for this culminating event. When all 326 of our fourth-year medical students representing all nine of our IU School of Medicine campuses opened red envelopes simultaneously to reveal where they would complete their residencies, they shared hugs and shed tears of joy. This special moment honors the dedication and hard work that have prepared them for the final step of their journey to become medical doctors.

Among our students who celebrated was Setarah Mohammad Nader, who matched into internal medicine at IU School of Medicine. An Afghan refugee, Setarah overcame her own self-doubt about becoming a physician and has made it her mission to empower other girls and women to pursue an education.

Also celebrating was Jamie Durbin, who completed her four years of medical training at our IU School of Medicine-Evansville campus. Before she begins training in family medicine at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital in Youngstown, Ohio, Jamie will have the chance to shadow her family doctor, who delivered her at birth and inspired her interest in family medicine.

As the state’s flagship university with the nation’s largest medical school, IU’s success in preparing these future doctors is vital to our state and nation’s workforce. On Match Day, 119 of our students were matched into programs in Indiana, including to IU School of Medicine or IU Health-affiliated residencies. This means Indiana will continue to benefit from their medical expertise, and they will be more likely to reside and work here after completing their training.

Students also matched with residencies in 32 states across the U.S., with 78 of our students matching into institutions ranked in the top 25 by U.S. News and World Report, including Stanford, Harvard University and the Mayo Clinic.

In this year’s class, 41 percent of our students matched into primary care — reflecting our commitment to ensuring that primary-care physicians, who are essential in improving health outcomes, are available for decades to come. Also, 34 percent of the class matched into hospital-based programs, helping fill critical workforce needs in areas such as improving mental health.

Congratulations to our 2022 Match Day Class. We wish you all the best and are looking forward to your bright future.
