Text messaging terms of service

By providing your mobile phone number, you agree to these Terms of Service and to receive periodic text messages from Indiana University (“IU”).

Program description

IU sends text messages to communicate about recruitment, admissions, advising, course registration, scholarships, financial aid, tuition payments, student and campus life, events, emergencies, and other information related to IU (the “Service”). In some cases, you may receive marketing or promotional text messages that relate to IU events, programs, or recruitment.

Message frequency

The number of text messages will vary and there is no set minimum or maximum number of text messages you will receive.

How to opt-out

You can choose to stop receiving text messages at any time by texting STOP to any of IU’s short or long codes. You will receive a one-time text message confirming that you have opted out.

Support/help

Text HELP to receive instructions on how to use the Service as well as how to unsubscribe. You may also contact smshelp@iu.edu for further information.

Supported carriers

Supported carriers may change from time to time but currently include most major carriers within the United States.

Access or delivery to mobile network is not guaranteed

Delivery of information and content to a mobile device may fail due to a variety of circumstances or conditions. You understand and acknowledge that network services, including but not limited to mobile network services, are outside of IU’s control, and IU is not responsible or liable for issues arising from network services. Carriers will not be liable for any delayed or undelivered messages.

Cost

IU does not charge for the Service. However, message and data charges may apply to each text message sent or received in connection with the Service; please contact your mobile phone service provider for details.

Your privacy/data

IU’s Data Management policies establish four (4) categories of data based on the sensitivity of the information. Critical Data is the highest level of classification and includes information such as protected health information, driver’s license numbers, passport numbers, visa numbers, passwords, pins, and access codes. IU will not request or exchange Critical Data via the Service, and you agree not to provide any Critical Data to IU via the Service. While Critical Data should not be exchanged through the Service, you and IU may exchange information about your enrollment, employment, and relationship with IU that falls into one of the three lower levels of data classification. Your information will be maintained by IU in accordance with any applicable laws (e.g., FERPA) and IU policies. No mobile/opt-in information will be shared/sold with third parties/affiliates for marketing/promotional purposes. If you have questions about how your data is used or protected, please contact privacy@iu.edu.
