Degree Information

The IU Southeast School of Education offers you a program that will lead to a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education, with a focus in social studies. The B.S. in Secondary Education is designed to prepare you to obtain your initial teacher licensing in the middle school, junior high, and high school setting in both Indiana and Kentucky.

The Secondary Program in Social Studies is based on standards required by the Indiana Office of Educator Licensing and Development, the Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (INTASC), and the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).

Degree Requirements

The Secondary Education Bachelor of Science in Education with a focus in social studies requires specific courses in historical perspectives, government and citizenship, and geographical perspectives. With additional coursework, you can add the following areas of emphasis:

  • Psychology
  • Sociology
  • Economics

You'll also take courses to learn teaching skills, classroom management, and other education-related skills.

Careers

This degree prepares you to teach social studies courses at the middle school, junior high, and high school level in both Indiana and Kentucky. You'll have intensive training in teaching and classroom management, as well as a specific course of study that prepares you to prepare and deliver curriculum in history, government, geography, and (with additional courses) psychology, sociology, and economics.

You'll be prepared to obtain your initial licenses to teach in Indiana and Kentucky. You'll be ready to lead a classroom with confidence and the assurance that you are ready to lead middle schoolers, junior highers, and high schoolers to a firmer understanding of social studies.
