Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures

Bachelor of Arts

About

The B.A. major in Middle Eastern languages and cultures—culture track provides students with broad training in Middle Eastern cultures while developing an intermediate proficiency through the fourth semester level in a chosen Middle Eastern language (Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, or Turkish). In their coursework, MELC culture majors can investigate the politics, history, literature, dialectics, religions, and other aspects of Middle Eastern societies. Courses in Middle Eastern literatures and cultures, many of which are open to students with no knowledge of any of the Middle Eastern languages, may be used in conjunction with approved courses from other disciplines, such as Central Eurasian studies, religious studies, history, political science, and folklore to complete the major. Graduates of this major pursue careers in a variety of fields, especially in government, journalism, the military, and with various nonprofits.
