Elective Title: 93SG870 — ORAL & MAXILLOFACIAL SURGERY

Description:

This elective is designed to accomplish the following: 1. To provide the fourth-year medical student in-depth exposure to oral & maxillofacial surgery. 2. To provide the student interested in a career in another field with complimentary clinical experience in oral & maxillofacial surgery. 3. To train the student in specific diagnostic and clinical skills in oral & maxillofacial surgery as related to trauma, pathology, craniofacial deformities, and reconstruction of the oral & maxillofacial region. 4. To enhance the student’s understanding of the relationships that exist among the oral cavity associated oral, maxillofacial structures and systemic functions.

Learning Objectives

  • 1) Perform a focused oral & maxillofacial history and physical examination (PC1)
  • 2) Perform an oral cancer screening (PC5)
  • 3) Suture a simple oral and facial laceration (PC5)
  • 4) Provide local anesthesia in preparation for suturing a laceration as described above, and to provide relief for dental pain (PC5)
  • 5) Diagnose maxillofacial fractures by performing a focused examination as described above, and interpreting maxillofacial imaging (PC3)
  • 6) Construct an intelligent differential diagnosis for various maxillofacial pathologies (PC2)
  • 7) Identify and understand the growth and development of various craniofacial deformities (MK2)

  • Clinical Performance Evaluation Form; (Clinical Observation, objective exam)
