Elective Title: 93SG830 — PREPARATION FOR SURGICAL RESIDENCY

Description:

This course is designed to provide knowledge and instruction on topics and skills that are clinically relevant to students pursuing a surgical internship in General Surgery. A combination of didactic sessions, small group discussions, and skills sessions are incorporated to provide the student with essential core material in the care and management of the general surgical patient. Goal: To give the student a more focused view of the principles and practice of surgery as they relate to the upcoming years of residency and to ease the transition from medical school to the intern year. Upon completion of this rotation, students will have gained experience in: 1. Triaging and evaluating trauma patients 2. Constructing an advanced knowledge base of didactic sessions:

Learning Objectives

  • 1) Demonstrate appropriate skills in preparing for surgery (OR protocol)(PC5)
  • 2) Apply surgical principles to operative and clinical scenarios (MK4)
  • 3) Perform various surgical procedures including: suturing and knot tying, Bovie and Harmonic scalpel utilization, basic laparoscopy skills, ultrasonography, Central Venous Line, chest tube placement, intern-relevant operations on cadavers (PC5)

Assessment

  • Professional Development Evaluation Form; This is a different type of course and we do not have dedicated rubrics for grading. Much is participation based. This may change as we are trying new rubrics in the 2015-2016 course in April 2016 to make sure they are useful before implementing them as an actual grade. (Participation in skills curriculum and didactic sessions. Direct observation by course director and additional surgical faculty)
