IU School of Medicine

Elective Title: 93MC720 — CARDIOLOGY

Description:

This elective is a clinical experience during which the student-physicians join the cardiovascular health care team, developing the student's skills which are useful in the diagnosis and management of cardiovascular diseases. The student-physicians are encouraged to develop a familiarity with the varied inpatient and outpatient cardiovascular diagnostic modalities available for the cardiovascular patient. Student-physicians during this elective are encouraged to learn about patient experiences by obtaining their own personal baseline ECG's, echocardiograms, and may have an exercise treadmill ECG test if desired. Close observational experience is also available for the student to be familiar with cardiac catheterizations, angioplasties, and coronary surgery. Student-physicians are responsible for the initial evaluation and case presentation for patients in whom cardiologic consultation has been requested. Cases are discussed and reviewed by the cardiology physician staff. Students are encouraged to attend all cardiology conferences which include x-ray, ECG, and the combined cardiac catheterization-cardiovascular surgery conference. Time is allowed for attendance at the weekly Medicine Grand Rounds at the Indiana University Medical Center.
