Elective Title: 53AN701 — ANESTHESIA AND PERIOPETATIVE PAIN MANAGEMENT

Description:

Actual "hands on" experience in the private practice of Anesthesia in outpatient and inpatient setting. Special emphasis will be given to endotracheal intubation, ventilation and routine conduct of an anesthetic. Experience with arterial line, central line and spinal anesthetic placement will be provided. Experience and exposure may be customized to particular student's desires. Extremely flexible rotation, allowing student to direct his/her own learning experience, and will be structured dependent upon students initiative and areas of interest.

Learning Objectives

  • 1) Evaluate pre- and postoperative patients, understanding role of medications, evaluation of laboratory data, EKG, and follow-up (PC1)
  • 2) Demonstrate the basics of airway management including mask ventilator, LMA use and endotracheal intubation with direct supervision (PC5)
  • 3) Explain the procedures associated with line placement and invasive monitoring, and spinal anesthesia placement (PC5)
  • 4) Identify anesthetic drugs and explain their uses and contraindications (MK4)

  • Clinical Performance Evaluation Form (1. Observation of clinical skills and procedures; 2. Oral/case presentations to medical students/faculty; 3. Discussion with faculty (patient cases)
