Fulfilling our promise begins with preparing students to meet their potential, but it includes a lot more. It also means finding ways, big and small, to advance knowledge, nurture creativity, and help people throughout our state, nation, and world. And we’ve been doing it for 200 years.
Ensuring a brighter future for all
Preparation for whatever comes next
Our students’ success is our No. 1 priority. To better prepare them for the careers of tomorrow, we’ve launched or reconfigured 10 schools this decade. And we’re constantly adding new academic programs, like intelligent systems engineering.
To help our students succeed now and after graduation, we’ve kept our tuition and fees as low as possible and increased scholarships. Since 2011, our nationally recognized MoneySmarts financial literacy program has helped IU students reduce their borrowing by $126.4 million, a 19 percent decrease.Explore our academic programs
Faculty who inspire
Our faculty members catalyze discoveries and ignite students’ potential. Throughout their careers, we help our faculty share their knowledge, innovate in their research and creative activity, and prepare for leadership positions—all within an environment of intellectual freedom that values diverse backgrounds and perspectives.Learn about our faculty’s honors and awards
A culture of perpetual discovery
Discovery is what we do. Our expansive, interdisciplinary explorations and artistic endeavors have yielded many innovations.
No challenge is too big for us. That’s why we’re investing $300 million over five years in our most ambitious research program ever: Grand Challenges, which is developing transformative solutions for some of the planet’s most pressing problems.
Helping Indiana thrive
IU is an engine for Indiana’s economy. Our expertise helps Indiana communities and organizations succeed. And we translate the discoveries and innovations of our faculty, staff, and students into new products, services, and companies.
During the 2018 fiscal year, 141 U.S. and global patents were granted to IU through the IU Innovation and Commercialization Office, which transfers IU discoveries to the commercial marketplace. Since 1997, IU research has generated almost 3,200 inventions, leading to more than $115 million in licensing and royalty income for IU departments, labs, and inventors.Learn more about economic development at IU
An education that works anywhere
IU is a gateway to the world—and we prepare students to live and work anywhere in it.
We have wide-ranging language and culture programs, more than 380 overseas study options, Global Gateway Network offices in other countries, and partnerships with nearly 60 institutions worldwide. More than 8,100 international students are pursuing their educations here—a testament to the power of an IU degree.Learn more about IU’s global engagement
A community where you belong
Our diversity is one of our greatest strengths. The students, faculty, and staff you’ll encounter here are a cross section of our world. Together, they form a culturally rich community of mutual respect, understanding, and support where everyone can fit in and flourish.Learn more about diversity at IU
A healthier state, nation, and world
Your health is close to our heart. That commitment has led to many achievements over the years, such as the first use of DNA technologies to locate a marker for a human disease gene—the gene responsible for Huntington’s disease.
Led by our eight clinical schools—including the IU School of Medicine—we’re investing in research, training, collaboration, and infrastructure that facilitate better treatments and cures and lead to solutions for today’s biggest public health challenges.Read about the health sciences in our strategic plan
