Music Education

Specialist in Music Education

The Specialist in Music Education program is designed to provide a flexible program of study beyond the master’s degree for students whose interests are in public school teaching or supervision. The focus of the certificate is on pedagogical knowledge that can be applied in a variety of educational settings. Courses may be chosen from music education theory and practice, performance, conducting, music theory and history, techniques, and methods, and from areas outside music. The applicant must have a master’s degree in music or music education and at least three years of teaching experience. With permission of the music education department, students may subsequently count courses in pursuit of fulfillment of the specialist certificate toward a doctorate.

Offered at IU Bloomington by Jacobs School of Music
