IU Bloomington

Diabetes Prevention Program

The Diabetes Prevention Program is a FREE 16-week evidence-based lifestyle change program designed to reduce the risk for developing type 2 diabetes.  The program is offered by Recreational Sports and supported by Healthy IU for faculty/staff at IU Bloomington.  Participants work with a lifestyle coach in a supportive group setting where weekly lessons focus on modest behavior changes to improve food choices and increase physical activity. The program is most successful if participants attend all sessions.

35% of U.S. adults aged 20 years or older have prediabetes. Type 2 diabetes is preventable. Take this 1-minute test through the American Diabetes Association to see if you are at risk.

Join us Thursdays, beginning August 28th, 4:30-5:30 p.m.

Mindful Way to Stress Reduction
An invitation to training in meditation and mindful movement

A growing body of research has shown that mindfulness meditation practice improves concentration and focus and may lead to greater well-being, less reactivity to stress, and fewer symptoms of anxiety, depression, fatigue, and sleep disturbance.

IU staff and faculty who attended this class have said:

  • “The class is absolutely wonderful—and for me, life-changing.”
  • “I can find inner peace through the techniques learned in this class that brings me a renewed sense of energy!"”
  • “This course has helped me realize what is most important and foremost in my life. All the other things are very small in comparison.”

This 10 session program focuses on:

  • Recognizing and addressing stressful situations effectively “on the spot”
  • Managing chronic stress
  • Improving focus and communication
  • Enhancing mind-body wellness

Employees are invited to the orientation, to assess if this class meets their needs. The 10-session class is free to employees committed to attending the weekly sessions. The class is an adaptation of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, the program developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn and the Center For Mindfulness, University of Massachusetts.

Fall Orientation is Wednesday, Sept. 10th, Noon to 1:00 at the IMU, State Room West.
