Director, Indiana University Cinema

Indiana University is seeking a director for a new, state-of-the-art cinema which will be equipped with the highest standards of 35mm, 16mm, and digital projection. The facility will provide a venue for the university’s substantial holdings in film, including those of the David S. Bradley Film Collection, the Black Film Center/Archive, the archives of the Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender, and Reproduction, the Lilly Library, and the Department of Communication and Culture. It will also screen rare prints from museums around the world and new films by national and international directors. We have designed the IU Cinema to meet the exhibition standards set by the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF).

Duties of the Position:

Develop an annual screening program, working both independently and in collaboration with campus faculty to schedule film showings, retrospectives, festivals, traveling exhibits, topical programs, and guest lectures. Create promotional materials, including newsletters, program notes, and a website. Assist with exhibits of library display materials. Maintain active relationships with the professional/scholarly film community, including national and university film museums and archives, the Association of Moving Image Archivists (AMIA) and the International Federation of International Film Archives (FIAF). Work with campus librarians and faculty to develop film and film-related collections. Manage the budget of the IU Cinema, coordinate fundraising and grant-writing activities, and supervise a staff that includes a full-time technician and part-time student workers/interns. The director of the IU Cinema reports to the Provost/Executive Vice President of Indiana University. The provost reports to the President and the Trustees of Indiana University.
