Vice President and General Counsel

Indiana University invites applications and nominations for the position of Vice President and General Counsel of the university.

As one of the largest and most diverse public research institutions in the United States, Indiana University and its faculty excel in the life sciences, humanities, social sciences, and the arts, while IU's outstanding professional schools—from business and education to law, medicine, dental, and optometry—greatly expand the university's research accomplishments. IU has more than 109,000 students across eight campuses, more than 20,000 of whom are graduate and professional students, and more than 35,000 faculty, staff, and part-time employees. A record number of international students, more than 7300, enrolled at IU in 2011.

Indiana University is a dynamic and complex organization serving as a state leader in education, healthcare and economic growth. The total operating budget for all campuses of Indiana University is $3.0 billion. Grants, awards and funding to Indiana University for research and other programs totaled $604 million in 2009-10. University facilities are extensive – nearly 900 buildings and more than 9,000 acres. There are residential facilities at four IU-managed campuses, two with NCAA athletic programs, and five with NAIA athletic programs; there are more than 1,000 student organizations across the university.

The Vice President and General Counsel serves as the chief legal officer of Indiana University, reports to the President, and serves as a member of the President’s senior management team. The VP and General Counsel represents and directs the representation of Indiana University in all legal matters; serves as legal advisor to the Board of Trustees, the President, and other senior administrators; and serves as a resource on legal matters and issues of institutional procedure and governance.

The Office of the Vice President and General Counsel is based in Bloomington, with a second office in Indianapolis, and serves all IU campuses. The office is headed by the vice president and currently employs four full-time attorneys in Bloomington and two full-time attorneys in Indianapolis, plus legal interns and administrative office staff. The office employs outside counsel for litigation and major legal issues. The offices of Internal Audit and Affirmative Action also report to the vice president.

Salary will be commensurate with experience and competitive with like positions. Indiana University offers a generous package of benefits.
