CONTRACT AND GRANT EXPENDITURES BY SOURCE
Both restricted and unrestricted fund expenditures for research and public
service are supported significantly from funds received from contracts and grants. Direct
support of instruction from those funds is less significant, but activities associated
with grants and contracts indirectly complement the University's teaching mission.
In 1997-98, grant and contract support amounts to $196.2 million, up $6.3 million from the
previous year, an increase of 3.3 percent. Federal sources of $119.6 million account for
the largest portion (61 percent) of the $196.2 million. Contracts and grants from
non-federal agencies account for $76.6 million (39 percent).
