AN INDEX OF FACULTY EFFORT

A rough index of instructional resources is provided by dividing credit hour enrollment by the number of full-time academic appointments. The data used for this calculation are found on pages 44 and 57 for 1993-94 through 1997-98. The results of dividing credit hour enrollment by number of faculty on each campus for those years are found below (Fort Wayne is excluded because only the IU faculty paid by Indiana University are included in the data on page 57 - Number of Faculty page).
For all campuses of Indiana University, credit hour enrollment per full-time faculty in Fall semester, 1997-98, is 230. That average is distorted, however, because it includes the Health Division at Indianapolis where credit hour enrollment is a poor indicator of the intensity of teaching effort. Excluding the Health Division, average student credit hour enrollment per full-time faculty member is 300. That average is equivalent to three 3-credit-hour courses of about 34 students each for the semester.
