GENDER AND ETHNIC GROUP OF STUDENTS
Forty-two percent of Indiana University's students are male, 58 percent
female. The proportion of women ranges from a high of 71 percent on the East campus to a
low of 53 percent on the Bloomington campus. Ten years ago, 57 percent of Indiana
University's students were female; in Fall 1977-78, 48 percent were female.
Eleven percent of all students fit minority ethnic group classifications as defined by the
United States Office of Civil Rights. The highest proportions of minority students are
found on the Northwest campus (34 percent) and the Indianapolis campus (almost 14
percent). The Northwest campus has both the greatest percentage of African-American
students (24 percent of the total student population) and the greatest percentage of
Hispanic students (9 percent). The largest percentage of Asian students is found on the
Bloomington campus (3 percent).
