The Indiana University Alumni Association (IUAA) maintains biographical data on alumni of
Indiana University. In the spring of 1997, the Council of Alumni Association Executives
published a report of the 90 major alumni associations in the United States. IUAA ranked
third nationally with nearly 380,000 living graduates. It also ranked third in number of
total addressable records on file with 553,000 records of graduates, former students, and
friends of IU. A "living addressable alumnus" is defined as either a graduate or
former student of Indiana University for whom the Alumni Association has a mailable
address. The IUAA database has an addressable rate of 92.1% of the total records on file.
Graduates are defined as persons who have received an IU degree from the associate degree
level through the doctoral degree level. A former student of record is a person who has
attended IU and for whom IU has decided to maintain a record. Not all former students are
maintained in the alumni database. Graduates and former students together make up the
definition of alumni.
