COMPARISON OF INSTRUCTIONAL FEES - MAIN CAMPUSES and regional campuses of Big Ten Institutions

Full-time academic-year instructional fee rates for 2004-05 for Indiana University Bloomington and the main campuses of the other public Big Ten institutions appear in the table below. Northwestern, a private institution, is excluded because its fee rates are not comparable to those of the public institutions.

Indiana University Bloomington's resident undergraduate fee of $5,986 ranks seventh, and is $4,422 less than the highest rate $10,408 at Penn State University, but only $1,284 higher than the lowest rate $4,702 at the University of Iowa.

NOTES: Undergraduate fees for Indiana are based on a flat fee for 12-17 hours; undergraduate fees for Michigan, Michigan State and Penn State are based on averages of lower and upper division fees. All other institutions are based on an academic year of 30 hours for undergraduate and 24 hours for graduate students.

As shown below, the resident undergraduate rate of $4,283 for four of Indiana University's regional campuses -- East, Kokomo, Northwest, and Southeast -- ranks 12th out of 15 in a comparison of academic-year full-time instructional fee rates among the regional campuses of the Big Ten institutions. The rate of $4,283 is $5, 299 less than the highest rate of $9,582 at the Altoona campus of Penn State University and is $283 more than the lowest rate of $4,000 at the University of Wisconsin regionals.

For the East, Kokomo, and Southeast campuses, the resident graduate rate of $3,930 ranks 12th out of 14; it is $7,418 less than the highest rate, $11,348 at the Altoona campus of Penn State University, and it is only $570 more than the lowest rate, $3,360 at the University of Illinois Springfield campus.

In 1993-94, the Trustees approved a separate fee structure for the South Bend campus. Its resident undergraduate fee rate ranks 10th out of 15, two positions higher than the rank of other IU regional campuses. South Bend's nonresident undergraduate rate also ranks two positions higher than the corresponding rates on the other IU regional campuses. Its nonresident graduate fee rate ranks higher as well.
