Gender and Ethnicity of Students

Forty-two percent of Indiana University's students are male, fifty-eight percent female. The proportion of women ranges from a high of 72 percent at Kokomo campus to a low of 52 percent on Bloomington campus. Ten years ago, 58 percent of Indiana University's students were female; in Fall 1984-85, 55 percent were female.

Twelve percent of all students fit minority ethnic group classifications as defined by the United States Office of Civil Rights. The highest proportions of minority students are found on Northwest campus (36 %) and IUPUI campus (15 %). Northwest campus has both the greatest percentage of African-American students (23 %) and the greatest percentage of Hispanic students (11 %). The largest percentage of Asian students is found on the Bloomington campus (3 %).
