AN INDEX OF FACULTY EFFORT

A rough index of instructional resources is provided by dividing credit hour enrollment by the number of full-time academic appointments.
The data used for this calculation are found on pages 48 and 61 for 1998-99 through 2002-03.  The results of dividing credit hour enrollment by
number of faculty on each campus for those years are found below (Fort Wayne is excluded because on ly the IU faculty paid by Indiana University
are included.
For all campuses of Indiana University, credit hour enrollment per full-time faculty in fall semester, 2002-03, is 238.  That average is
distorted, however, because it includes the Health Division at IUPUI where credit hour enrollment is a poor indicator of the intensity of teaching
effort.  Excluding the Health Division, average student credit hour enrollment per full-time faculty member is 312.  That average is equivalent to
three 3-credit-hour courses of about 35 students each for the semester.
