AN INDEX OF FACULTY EFFORT
| A rough index of instructional resources is provided by dividing credit hour enrollment by the number of full-time academic appointments. | |
| The data used for this calculation are found on pages 48 and 61 for 1998-99 through 2002-03. The results of dividing credit hour enrollment by | |
| number of faculty on each campus for those years are found below (Fort Wayne is excluded because on ly the IU faculty paid by Indiana University | |
| are included. | |
| For all campuses of Indiana University, credit hour enrollment per full-time faculty in fall semester, 2002-03, is 238. That average is | |
| distorted, however, because it includes the Health Division at IUPUI where credit hour enrollment is a poor indicator of the intensity of teaching | |
| effort. Excluding the Health Division, average student credit hour enrollment per full-time faculty member is 312. That average is equivalent to | |
| three 3-credit-hour courses of about 35 students each for the semester. | |
