CONTRACT AND GRANT EXPENDITURES BY SOURCE
Both restricted and unrestricted fund expenditures for research and public service are supported
significantly from funds received from contracts and grants.  Direct support of instruction from those
funds is less significant, but activities associated with grants and contracts indirectly complement the
University's teaching mission.
In 2001-02, grant and contract support amounts to $295 million, up $41.3 million from the
previous year, an increase of 16 percent.  Federal sources of $165.2 million account for the largest
portion (56 percent) of the $295 million.  Contracts and grants from non-federal agencies account for
$129.7 million (44 percent).
