senior User Experience (UX) Architect - PA4IT

Serves as the primary User Experience (UX) expert on the UXI team; and ensures the high quality of the overall user experience for the Kuali enterprise software. Works in collaboration with a team of user experience designers, UI Developers, UX Developers, business analysts, subject-matter experts (SMEs), and project leadership, to apply user-centered designs and agile development methodologies in the design, development, and documentation of the interactive components of Kuali software. Works closely with the systems architecture and functional team leads to establish overall work priorities and activities.

Establishes and articulates which user-centered design methods are best applied to specific Kuali projects and ensures adherence to these methods and guides the project in regards to the resources required to complete these tasks. The methods may include user research, creating user models, usability evaluations, and user testing; using and creating design patterns and UI components; and creating wireframes and prototypes. Provides technical leadership to Kuali community working with staff from Kuali partners in user-centered design and agile development processes to generate innovative solutions that directly benefit the Kuali community.

Responsible for working with other Kuali project teams, ensuring continued evolution and development of the Kuali User Interaction Model (UIM), style guide, user-centered design best practices, responsive design, and accessibility standards. These standards and practices must evolve over time to keep up with quickly changing technology and advancements in user interface development.

Creates and maintains relationships with key stakeholders within the Kuali community who are geographically distributed. Works with others in software development, software design, and end-user communities to develop world class intuitive front end user interfaces for the myriad of applications and services offered by the Kuali Foundation, with a large focus on those services that will be delivered to key constituents in higher education . faculty and students.


REQUIRED: Bachelor's degree in a computer related field and five years of human computer interaction experience with a variety of user-centered design research methodologies (IE: experiment design, contextual inquiry, interviewing and observation, usability testing, focus groups, surveys, expert evaluation, and Web data analytics) including at least two years of experience leading a team of interaction designers and user researchers.

A combination of related education and experience may be considered at a 2:1 ratio.

Must have expert knowledge of user-centered design methodologies, constructing prototypes, wireframes, and information architecture including software &web design tools (IE: HTML5, XHTML, DHTML, XML, CSS, AJAX, and JavaScript) as well as the basic advantages and disadvantages of the technologies and tools used including HTML, CSS, Javascript, AJAX, and Service-Oriented Architecture.

Possess deep knowledge of Web semantics and accessibility best practices; and excellent skills in project management, including knowledge of the project lifecycle, the agile software development process, and ability to facilitate team communication and collaboration. Expertise in current design practices and tools including Illustrator, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, and MS Visio.

Ability to clearly communicate complex ideas using diagrams, models, prototypes, pictures, and writing; excellent interpersonal, interviewing, presentation and communication skills; and experience in providing training and consulting in user-centered design practices.

PREFERRED: Master's degree.
