Network Engineer - PA2IT
Be a part of the growing team of network engineers at the Global Research Network Operations Center at IU (globalnoc.iu.edu)!
Under general supervision, provides technical expertise and support for the development, testing, deployment and production delivery of mission critical networks and services. Performs general system administration and production support including programming of network systems, installation of new releases, patches, and operating system components. Maintains reliability, availability and performance of networks 24 hours per day; and analyzes network systems to ensure peak performance at all times. Consults with users to perform complex problem diagnosis and resolution on systems impacting the delivery of mission critical networks; participates in the configuration of central systems to meet the needs of the University; and maintains system documentation.
Participates in network component benchmarking executions; proactively monitors for security exposures; and acquires and deploys patches and security fixes to development, test, and production environments. Central systems under the responsibility of these positions host sensitive data for a wide range of network functions.
Provides consultation and mentoring to various other GlobalNOC groups and staff; and documents the support of critical technologies to provide staff backup. Participates in the analysis, evaluation, selection, programming, testing, implementation, and support of various GlobalNOC services and applications. Participates in retirement of old resources or the implementation of additional ones as prescribed by senior staff; and provides hardware and software component capacity planning and costing studies as needed. Travels to various locations to physically install highly sensitive, large-scale networking equipment in customer as well as telco environments.
REQUIRED: Bachelor's degree in computer science, business systems or related technical discipline and one year of experience in information technology environment with increasing complexity and scope.
Combination of related education and experience may be considered at a ratio of 2:1.
Valid driver's license with ability to be insured by Indiana University.
Experience with computer networks, local and wide area; practical experience supporting one or more research networks; and excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills.
PREFERRED: Experience with the following: Layer 1, 2 and 3 technologies; JunOS, IOS-XR, IOS, other network software packages.
NOTE: This position requires travel approximately ten times per year.
