Troubleshooting:

Launching the Application:

VU should work on any Windows workstation connected to the internet.  There is no installation procedure, and there are no additional configuration files or DLLs required.  The file VU.exe can be downloaded to the client machine and run there, or it can be executed directly from the UITS FO web site.

Some of the forms will not display completely in 640x480 resolution, it is recommended that you use at least 600x800.

At this time there is no support for Linux or Mac clients, only for Windows.

If the VU application will not execute successfully on your Windows PC, email uitsfin@indiana.edu with a description of the problem, and the error message if available.    <top>

Connecting to the Server:

The database server used by VU is the IEDSS Oracle server.  You must have a valid user ID and password for that server to connect through VU.  You can request that access online at this address: https://www.indiana.edu/~iuie/prod/IuieWelcome.html  If you get the error "Invalid user/password" and you are sure you are entering both correctly, be sure that you have an account on this server.  Your ADS account will not automatically allow you access to this data.

The IEDSS server is available available weekdays 7:30AM to 10:30PM, Saturday 10:00AM to 10:30PM and Sunday noon to 10:30PM.  You will get an error trying to connect to VU during times when IEDSS is unavailable.

If you are connected to the network or dialup, and you know you have a valid ID and password for IEDSS, the IEDSS server is available, and you are still unable to access VU correctly, email uitsfin@indiana.edu with a description of the problem, and the error message if available.    <top>

Hung Query:

The application is written as a single thread.  Once a query is launched, the application is blocked from any other activity until the results are returned.  Should the connection to the server be lost during a query, the application will hang.  The only option is to terminate the application from the task manager.  Multi-threading is planned for a future enhancement, which will allow the user to cancel a query, or set a timeout limit.

Application Error Messages:

The RPC server is unavailable - this message indicates that you are either unable to connect to the application server, or your session on the server has been terminated.  Sessions are terminated after 4 hours of inactivity.  In most cases, you can clear this message by pressing the OK button, and the client will automatically re-establish connection to the server.

If you have a working network connection and this message continues to appear, email uitsfin@indiana.edu with a description of the problem.

Error reading from socket - this message indicates that your previously established server connection has been broken.  Most likely either your network connection has been disrupted or your server connection has timed out.  In most cases, you can clear this message by pressing the OK button, and the client will automatically re-establish connection to the server.

If you have a working network connection and this message continues to appear, email uitsfin@indiana.edu with a description of the problem.    <top>

Feedback:
