Institutional Research Council

The primary objective of the Indiana University Institutional Research Council (IRC) is to promote and align the development of institutional research capacities across the campuses of Indiana University. Members of the IRC communicate regularly to ensure that institutional research at Indiana University is effective at all levels and supports both campus-specific and university-wide needs in a consistent way.

Projects

The IRC initiates and monitors a set of projects to improve institutional research resources and capacities across the IU campuses.

Current projects include:

The IR Database

A series of multi-year common format institutional research datasets.

Internal/External Reports Inventory

A searchable catalogue of reports prepared by various IU offices for internal or external distribution.

Program/Process Evaluation

Creating a network of IU staff who support such processes.

Definitions/Standards

Information domain specific groups that examine current practices and recommend strategies for developing more consistent uses of data definitions and standards. Groups are currently active in the areas of human resources (faculty and staff) and student financial aid.

Enrollment projections

University Institutional Research and Reporting (UIRR) staff work with campus IR staff to promote the alignment of projections created for budget construction purposes with campus enrollment management efforts.

Data access/web reporting tools

IRC members share their experiences regarding available and emerging tools for accessing, analyzing, and disseminating data.

The IRC also takes up issues regarding university-wide initiatives that require significant institutional research and analysis support.

Meetings

The IRC typically meets once a semester on a face-to-face basis and carries out the rest of its activities through electronic communications.
