This is technical work performing a variety of tasks, following well established guidelines, to evaluate condition of library materials and perform repair and preservation techniques to ensure that materials are in a usable condition.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Determines appropriate handling and treatments for materials in strict accordance with current internationally recognized preservation principles.
Conducts appropriate conservation and repair techniques using specialized tools such as binocular microscope, suction table, and hand book binding tools.
Constructs and applies new cases and covers for books to ensure continued protection.
Rebinds books using technique most suited to original material; constructs and applies new spines.
Fabricates protective enclosures for fragile library materials.
Mends torn or damaged paper using Japanese tissue paper and wheat starch paste.
Encapsulates flat materials using ultra-sonic welder, flattens and dries wet materials, and removes pressure sensitive tape from originals.
Salvages library materials damaged by water or other natural disaster, restoring them to usable condition.
Trains and supervises student employees in photocopying brittle books.
Assists head of Conservation in training students in basic repair techniques and safe use of tools.
Integrates new treatments, procedures, and conservation information into routines.
Operates computer equipment to perform circulation functions, communicate with library staff, generate labels, and prepare reports.
Maintains tools, equipment, and conservation supplies.
Compiles statistics on work performed.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of English and Metric measuring systems.
Knowledge of paper/publications preservation and handling techniques.
Good time management skills.
Excellent interpersonal and communications skills.
Ability to work on several tasks simultaneously.
Ability to meet deadlines.
Education: High school diploma or GED.
Experience: Six months to one year of bookbinding experience
