Job Purpose

Under general supervision performs library duties requiring specialized knowledge of a subject, language, or discipline or supervise a single function of the library.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

Supervises public and access services for the main library, which may include the ongoing operations of a public service desk; circulation operations, which includes shelving and shifting of materials, retrieving materials, and searching for missing materials; and resolving non-routine problems related to these activities.

Assists patrons by providing non-routine, in depth reference that requires knowledge of a specific subject area and/or languages and that may require research.

Provides basic one-on-one or group instruction on a specific subject or area; gives library orientation tours and presentations.

Assists in the management and preservation of materials in a specific subject or area 

Monitors physical condition of collection and equipment; troubleshoots routine equipment and computer problems such as jammed printers, inoperable workstations, copy machines, assesses technology problems and identifies the best means of correcting  these problems; acts as liaison with Library Information Technology.

Creates, edits, and maintains help files, instructional or training materials, and related content for internal (librarians, library staff) and external (students, faculty, other library patrons) users

Maintains manual and electronic files to accurately reflect the status and location of current holdings; updates and purges as necessary to ensure accuracy

Supervise Temporary and Support Staff employees

Processes payroll forms; maintains employment records; monitors Temporary employee and work-study budgets

Collects and collates data; compiles statistics; uses compiled information to prepare unit reports; ensures completeness and accuracy

Maintains awareness of advances that would make the unit’s services more efficient

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of library procedures and resources

Ability to process complex, detailed work with accuracy; strong organizational skills

Experience in searching and editing online library databases (preferably SIRSI)

Computer experience including e-mail, Internet applications, database searching, and working knowledge of computer and word processing/database/spreadsheet software

Good interpersonal skills

Knowledge of foreign language may be required for some positions

Demonstrated problem-solving and decision-making abilities; ability to pay attention-to-detail and follow established guidelines;

Good oral and written communications skills

Knowledge of on-line searching procedures 

Minimum Requirements

Education: Two years of college level coursework

Experience: One year library experience.

Language: Some positions may require specific foreign language skills, such as knowledge of basic language components, vocabulary, syntax, recognizing parts of speech and the ability to read and comprehend main points of text.
