This library service work performing a variety of routine and non-routine tasks related to cataloging library material.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Catalogs and indexes material; enters data into computer system; performs descriptive cataloging and subject analysis.
Searches for, establishes, and creates on-line name/title authority records in accordance with online data base and card catalog.
Searches data bases for matching bibliographic records; brings records into system, inventories collection being converted; resolves any problems relating to missing items or inaccurate records.
Searches on-line data base for new titles; creates a brief record for ordering purposes.
Trains part-time student workers to assist in cataloging; serves as resource on questions regarding policies and procedures.
Maintains awareness of any changes in standards and procedures involved with cataloging and authority files.
Assists with processing of materials, check-in, and inventory; assists in ordering materials.
Assigns accession and shelf numbers.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of cataloging authority procedures
Knowledge of library specific databases and search procedures
Knowledge of computer and database software
Ability to accurately review and process detailed information
Problem solving skills
Good interpersonal skills
Good oral and written communications skills
Education: Two years of college level coursework
Experience: Six months in library setting
