Job Purpose

This is library service work performing a variety of non-routine tasks requiring some independent judgment relating to the cataloging of the University Library's collection.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

Catalogs material using bibliographic records; updates and maintains card catalog and data bases.

Creates original cataloging where no source record exists using derivative cataloging.

Edits bibliographic source records, locally created records, and records from printed sources for university and library data bases.

Revises cataloging as needed; edits authority records.

Creates original series and name authority records; assigns classification numbers and subject headings.

Assists in training and supervision any temporary employees; serves as resource person on questions relating to policies and procedures.

Monitors and maintains supply inventory; reorders as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of computer and database software

Knowledge of cataloging procedures

Knowledge of foreign language helpful

Familiarity with standard office equipment and procedures

Problem solving skills

Good interpersonal skills

Good oral and written communications skills

Minimum Requirements

Education: Two years of college level coursework

Experience: One year of library experience
