Job Purpose

This is veteran animal care work related to the maintenance and operation of the facility’s sanitation, environmental controls, and animal care equipment and supplies.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

Cares for laboratory animals and colonies; provides water and mixes feeds for regular and special diets. Recognizes and reports changes in feeding or drinking habits, general behavior and outward signs of disease or abnormal appearance.

Administers medications and treatments; collects specimens such as blood or microbiological swabbing for diagnostic or environmental control procedures.

Assists with and performs more advanced technical animal care procedures and operations such as; surgery prep and support, debilitated animal support, invasive specimen collection, etc.  Performs animal euthanasia as necessary; disposes of remains and/or carcasses.

Operates and maintains sanitation, environmental control, and specialized animal care equipment.

Receives, stores and rotates feed and bedding; maintains records of supplies, animal health and breeding data.

Assists with training and instructing lower level animal caretakers and student employees; performs duties of lower level animal caretakers as needed.

May act as team leader in the operations of a small facility or work independently without direct supervision.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of computer and database/word processing software.

Strong knowledge of animal care.

Basic scientific knowledge.

Ability to create and maintain filing system.

Ability to lift 50 lbs and withstand sustained periods of physical activity (such as standing, bending, or stooping).

Ability to work under unpleasant environmental conditions, such as dust, high humidity and temperature, odors, excreta, and noise.

Minimum Requirements

Education: High school diploma or GED, with certification as Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT Certificate). Valid driver’s license. 

Experience: Two years laboratory animal experience.
