Job Purpose

This is basic animal care work that monitors and maintains the laboratory breeding colonies for experimental purposes.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

Provides routine care for laboratory animals and breeding colonies; performs regular feeding and watering.

Maintains sanitation and animal care equipment of the facility; removes excreta and debris; uses detergents and disinfectants to clean and sanitize cages, animal rooms and related areas.

Monitors animal health and observes for overt signs of disease; reports any changes to supervisor. Handles, restrains and transfers animals as directed; performs euthanasia and disposes of remains and/or carcasses.

May provide assistance in basic procedures such as maintaining animal and experimental records, collecting specimens for diagnostic or environmental controls.

Participates in receiving, storing and rotating feed, bedding and other animal care supplies and equipment.

Assists higher level Animal Care Technicians and facility users as directed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of computer and database/word processing software.

Basic knowledge of animal care.

Ability to create and maintain filing system.

Ability to lift 50 lbs and withstand sustained periods of physical activity (such as standing, bending, or stooping).

Ability to work under unpleasant environmental conditions, such as dust, high humidity and temperature, odors, excreta, and noise.

Minimum Requirements

Education: High school diploma or GED, with certification as Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT Certificate) within one year of employment. Valid driver’s license.

Experience: Six months animal care experience.
