This is technical work performing phlebotomy and specimen collection as well as associated clerical work in support of medical lab functions.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Collects a variety of specimens for medical testing including: venipunctures and throat swabs; distributes specimens to appropriate department.
Performs laboratory analytical testing according to standard operating procedures. Recognizes and evaluates abnormal findings and reports to appropriate personnel.
Operates autoclave and bacti hood; sets up bacteriological cultures; prepares media; prepares bacteriological cultures and distilled water.
Opens and closes lab; cleans and disinfects lab; washes glassware and pipettes; cleans and disinfects shelves, waste recepticals, venipuncture areas, refrigerators, freezers, and incubators; assures proper disposal of biohazardous waste.
Answers phone and screens callers; responds to inquiries or refers to appropriate office or individual; greets patients, answers patient questions and directs patient to appropriate resources.
Generates and processes necessary paperwork on patient; operates computer; delivers reports to appropriate location.Verifies and copies various hospital and reference laboratory accounts.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of the principles of patient care.
Knowledge of medical instruments and equipment and their usage.
Knowledge of universal precautions related to blood and body fluids.
Knowledge of standard office equipment and procedures.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions in detail.
Ability to perform routine procedures accurately.
Ability to prepare records and reports.
Ability to maintain a sympathetic attitude toward patients.Good communication skills.
Education: Graduate of an approved Medical Laboratory Technician program (associate degree)
Experience: Three years clinical laboratory experience
Required Certifications/Licenses: Certification from a recognized agency, such as the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or the National Certification Agency for Medical Laboratory Personnel.
