This is technical and administrative compliance work in the collection, storage, inventorying and disposal of hazardous materials.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Ensures compliance with local, state and federal regulations by utilizing appropriate risk assessment techniques, engineering and hazard controls, University policies and best management practices.
Conducts regular safety inspections at various research facilities, laboratories and storage sites; conducts material and chemical inventories and equipment evaluations; ensures that chemicals are properly categorized and proper storage techniques are being practiced.
Serves as information resource for faculty, staff and students to ensure awareness of unrecognized hazards, safe handling, and safe disposal of hazardous materials. Provide consultations regarding audit results and assist in correcting deficiencies.
Maintains inspection records and inventory databases; compiles and submits periodic and annual reports required by the University and regulatory agencies.
Maintains awareness of any changes in local, state and federal regulations.
Assists in responding to hazardous chemical releases and spills on campus.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of the collection, storing, handling, and transporting of hazardous materials.
Knowledge of the basic safety measures associated with the use of radioactive materials and radiation.
Knowledge of federal and state hazardous waste regulations.
Ability to operate monitoring and measurement equipment.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Ability to prepare technical reports and documents.
Ability to interpret and explain applicable regulations, plans and specifications.
Education: Bachelors degree in biology, chemistry, physics, or other related physical science.
Experience: One year laboratory, research or environmental safety experience.
Combinations of related education and experience may be considered.
Certification: May require specific certification(s) related to the work being performed or the ability to obtain.
