This is technical work in the collection and disposal of hazardous or radioactive material.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Assists in the collection, classification, and packaging of hazardous chemicals in accordance with federal regulations; assists in operating "open houses" for centralized collection; assists in responding to hazardous chemical releases and spills.
Transports hazardous and radioactive wastes from generator sites to permitted storage facilities.
Performs data entry on departmental shipping, training, and inspection records; collects data for required reports.
Performs filing and photocopying operations; fills out routine paperwork.
Performs upkeep--washing, cleaning, etc.--on departmental vehicles; schedules routine maintenance.
Assists in the inspection of generator and storage facilities; assists in collecting water samples.
Monitors the disposal of decayed radioactive waste.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of the collection, storing, handling, and transporting of hazardous materials.
Knowledge of the basic principles of nuclear or radiation sciences and basic safety measures associated with the use of radioactive materials and radiation.
Knowledge of federal and state hazardous waste regulations.
Knowledge of chemical compatibility and properties.
Knowledge of computer and database/word processing software.
Ability to complete OSHA HAZWOPER Training
Ability to operate power tools.
Education: One year post-high school training in Hazardous Waste Disposal obtained through a technical or vocational school.
Experience: No experience required.
Registration: Commercial driver's license with hazardous materials endorsement.
