This is clerical work performing a variety of tasks, following established guidelines, related to the processing and maintenance of medical records, and the release of medical information.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Reviews requests for the release of medical information and provides requested medical information in accordance with internal policies and federal and state laws.
Verifies and changes diagnostic codes, such as, International Classification of Diseases and Current Procedural Terminology, on Health Center systems.
Oversees the work of other medical records staff in the absence to the Medical Records Supervisor.
Schedules appointments for medical practitioners.
Answers phone; responds to inquiries; refers to correct department or person.
Performs various clerical and secretarial duties, i.e. typing and processing mail.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES
Knowledge of procedures for release of medical information.
Knowledge of standard office procedures and equipment.
Good communications skills.
Ability to understand and follow directions.
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Ability to work well with a wide range of people.
Education: Associates degree in Health Information Management or closely related field.
Experience: Six months experience in medical records.
