This is clerical work transcribing dictation from medical personnel into patient records using standard equipment and following established procedures.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Transcribes medical dictation from physicians and nurse practitioners using dictaphones and computer software.
Ensures that correct format and appearance are maintained as well as the appropriate resource books.
Proofreads all work to ensure that name, account number, patient complaints, exams, diagnosis, treatment plans, and all other necessary information is accurate; files transcription in appropriate location.
Ensures that document screens are printed for productivity information and that final copy is posted on patient chart.
Learns new equipment and computer software as it is upgraded.
Trains new employees in use of equipment and computer software.
Assists in special projects.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Excellent knowledge of medical terms in a wide range of fields.
Knowledge of dictating equipment, computer, and appropriate computer software.
Knowledge of use of standard reference books.
Excellent spelling/grammar skills.
Ability to accurately type 70 words per minute.
Ability to decipher difficult dictation.
Education: Associates degree in medical records administration, office systems technology, secretarial science, or closely related field..
Experience: Six months experience in medical records and medical transcription.
