This is technical work in the fabrication of scientific apparatus used for research.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Fabricates new or unique scientific laboratory devices, components and precision instruments which may involve mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic or optical devices or components, robotics manipulators and computer integrated manufacturing tooling from high and low alloy steels, cast iron, brass, aluminum and exotic metal alloys, plexiglass, plastics, glass and wood requiring cutting, machining, drilling, forming, brazing, welding soldering, gluing, threading, and assembling; makes tables for lasers and other instruments.
Reads and interprets engineering drawings and sketches; measures to desired degree of accuracy; sets up and operates machine shop equipment including: lathes, mills, drill presses, and plasma cutter to produce component.
Cleans, repairs, and maintains vacuum pumps and other machines; keeps and monitors maintenance records; assists with start-up, maintenance, and overhaul of liquid nitrogen generator.
Maintains and monitors inventory of parts and supplies.
Retrieves hardware and supplies from vendors.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of the tools, materials, methods, and techniques of the machinist trade.
Knowledge of metals, plastics, glass, and specialized alloys, including their characteristics.
Knowledge of welding, brazing, and soldering and the qualities of materials used.
Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the machinist trade.
Ability to maintain close tolerance precision work from oral or written instructions, sketches, blueprints, and models.
Ability to use the precision tools and equipment common to the machinist trade.
Excellent math skills.
Education: Two years post-high school training in machining.
Combinations of related education and experience may be considered
Experience: One year experience as a machinist.
