Job Purpose

This is technical work performing a variety of technical and administrative tasks related to the maintenance of ophthalmic equipment of the School of Optometry.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

Maintains a variety of ophthalmic instruments and equipment; disassembles equipment; cleans and services operational components; reassembles.

Reads and interprets blueprints and sketches; fabricates components by setting up and operating machine shop equipment.

Orders any necessary parts and components; determines need for any outside services.

Calibrates and monitors performance tests to ensure conformance to specifications.

Maintains equipment repair reports for all clinics and teaching laboratories.

Assists in the coordination and maintenance of specialty bulb and battery inventory.

Researches any potential new equipment purchases; makes recommendations regarding new equipment.

Provides instruction to students on technical procedures and the troubleshooting and repairing of a variety of ophthalmic instruments and equipment.

Maintains awareness of technical advances in field; attends various training/programs to learn new repair techniques.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of the basic principles of optics.

Ability to disassemble and reassemble precision apparatus.

Ability to troubleshoot precision machine components.

Ability to perform measurement conversions and other math calculations.

Ability to operate machine tools.

Minimum Requirements

Education: High school diploma or GED.  Certification in ophthalmic equipment repair or ability to obtain within one year.

Experience: One year precision equipment repair.
