This is technical and administrative work in the oversight of the daily shop operations.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Assists faculty, students and staff with projects requiring extensive use of wood working, metal working, electronics, or other crafts; discusses concepts with users; suggests methods and techniques to be used; serves as resource on technical questions.
Maintains and repairs shop equipment including: table saw, band saw, lathes, radial arms, sanders, grinders, arc welders, and plasma cutter; disassembles, repairs, and rebuilds tools and equipment.
Trains and oversees employees when in the shop or laboratory area. Trains and oversees students using the shop for classroom and research projects; assists students in determining the types of material to use. Ensures the safety of all workers in the shop.
Researches possible new equipment purchases; makes recommendations regarding new purchases.
Monitors shop expenditures to ensure budget is maintained; provides projections for annual budget preparation.
Maintains supply inventory; reorders as needed.
Supervises and trains student workers; assigns tasks; monitors and evaluates job performance.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of the tools, materials, methods, and techniques of the trade.
Knowledge of metals, plastics, glass, and specialized alloys, including their characteristics.
Knowledge of welding, brazing, and soldering and the qualities of materials used.
Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
Ability to use a wide variety of power and mechanical tools and equipment.
Good communication and training skills.
Ability to interact effectively with faculty, staff and students.
Ability to use the precision tools and equipment.
Education: High school diploma or GED.
Experience: Three years wood/metal shop experience.
