This is highly technical work in the tuning and repair of pianos.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Adjusts piano strings to the proper pitch, tunes, repairs, and regulates pianos; monitors assigned classrooms on a regular basis to check for damage to pianos.
Responds to special requests from faculty and students regarding concert pianos.
Locates and repairs problems in wooden, steel, iron, ivory, and felt parts; realigns action parts; replaces old or worn parts; reconditions assigned pianos.
Maintains inventory of tools, equipment, and supplies needed for repairs.
Maintains schedules and records; submits bills for work completed.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of tools and instruments such as tuning hammers, regulating tools, and hand tools.
Ability to develop "ear" for tonal quality.
Ability to communicate with a wide range of people.
Good hearing, mechanical aptitude, and manual dexterity
Education: Two years post-high school training in music repair technology.
Experience: One year piano tuning experience.
