This is skilled work designing, fabricating and repairing scientific and unique experimental glassware for use in research laboratories.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Consults with clients to determine their custom glassware needs and advises them about what can and cannot be fabricated.
Works from drawings or sketches developed by or in consultation with the client, to melt, fuse, shape and form glass tubing and glassware into distilling columns, vacuum apparatus, stills, distilling heads, special purpose cells, special condensers, and other experimental laboratory equipment; fabricates new Pyrex and quartz glassware.
Repairs damaged glassware.
Operates glass heating torches, glassblowing lathe, glass saw, grinding disc, annealing oven, and other tools and equipment of the trade; maintains and repairs glassblowing equipment.
Maintains inventory of supplies; purchases supplies; oversees the packing and shipping of glassware.
Maintains records of time and supplies used on each job; bills appropriate account.
Arranges tours of facility; gives demonstrations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of the tools, equipment, materials, methods, and practices of the glass blowing trade.
Knowledge of the types, grades, and weights of glassware and their characteristics and properties as related to glass blowing operations.
Knowledge of the occupational hazard and safety precautions of the trade.
Ability to interact effectively with clients to determine their glassware needs.
Ability to perform design work from verbal or written instructions and rough sketches.
Ability to use and care for tools and equipment common to the glass blowing trade.
Education: High school diploma or GED.
Experience: Three years of experience in designing, fabricating and modifying blown glassware.
