This is advanced technical work in the development, design, modification, operation, maintenance and enhancement of accelerators and associated systems.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Develops, designs, modifies, operates, monitors, maintains, and/or enhances accelerator and associated systems and equipment within a skill area including tasks such as: designs, fabricates, and installs all electronic and mechanical components, including the most complex, for accelerator systems; repairs mechanical and electronic components; develops and produces new or modified equipment to meet special research needs; consults and collaborates with researchers regarding equipment needs; produces new equipment or processes; performs tests on various components to determine areas for improvements and modifications; monitors the performances parameters; makes recommendations for improvements; prepares sources for upcoming experiments; consults and collaborates with researchers; makes recommendations.
Performs master level tasks consistent with one or more accelerator skill area including: electrical, electronics, mechanical, drafting/design, machining, computers, accelerator operations; functions as a specialist in one or more accelerator skill area.
Trains workers in maintenance and repair techniques; provides technical guidance and direction to support staff; may assist in supervision of machine shop staff.
Leads teams for required emergency repair during experiments.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of scientific and accelerator technical fields.
Knowledge of radiation safety and occupational hazard and safety precautions.
Knowledge of the tools, equipment, materials, methods, and practices within an accelerator operation.
Ability to perform design work from verbal or written instructions and rough sketches.
Ability to use and care for tools and equipment common to accelerator operations.
Ability to interact effectively with clients to determine their research needs.
Education: Two years post-high school training in electrical, electronics, mechanical, drafting/design, machining, computers, or accelerator operations.
Experience: Thirteen years accelerator operations experience.
