Job Title and Grade: Payroll Assistant / SSOD

This is clerical work performing a variety of non-routine administrative tasks related to the processing of department payroll.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Processes payroll; audits vouchers for accuracy; investigates and resolves discrepancies; enters correct information into payroll computer system.
Compiles periodic budget reports monitoring payroll expense and available income.
Handles inquiries and resolves problems involving payroll, i.e. over or under payment; explains payroll policies and procedures; monitors employee earning limits.
Processes employees' appointment forms, tax forms, and other forms to ensure eligibility; verifies that data is correct, and that all deadlines are met.
Establishes and maintain employee data base so that needed information can be retrieved quickly and accurately .
Audits staff attendance sheets for accuracy; certifies that time is available; monitors work study time sheets to ensure hours do not exceed allotted limit.
Receives, verifies, and distributes paychecks.
Maintains records on employee time sheets, attendance records, and compensable time.
Trains and oversees any work study or temporary employee assigned to assist in duties; serves as resource for questions regarding policies and procedures.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of bookkeeping/accounting procedures.
Knowledge of payroll procedures.
Knowledge of computer and word processing/ database/spreadsheet software.
Knowledge of standard office equipment and procedures.
Ability to work under deadline pressure.
Ability to expeditiously perform accurate mathematical calculations.
Education: High school diploma or GED.
Experience: One year payroll office experience.
