Job Purpose

Performs tasks of police dispatcher related to the receiving, evaluating, assigning, and processing of requests for service.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

Answers calls for service and complaints from various sources that involve fire, accident, disturbances and criminal activities; sources include telephone, radio, computer systems, security and fire alarm systems and personal contact; transmits data to the appropriate individuals, departments or agencies.

Evaluates fire and security alarm activations and dispatches emergency responders.  Recognizes alarm malfunctions and initiates corrective actions.

Determines nature, location and priority of emergencies and enters information into computer aided dispatch system.

Monitors various University departmental and other public safety agency’s communications systems and dispatches officers.

Retrieves and enters data into department’s records management system; accesses state and federal crime files through the Indiana Data and Communication system (IDACS) and the National Crime Information Center (NCIC).

Instructs part time employees in procedures and operation of the communications center.

Ability to work effectively in stressful and emergency situations and to communicate detailed information.

Ability to operate office and communications equipment.

Ability to multi-task or perform two or more functions simultaneously.

Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively and to determine an appropriate course of action.

Ability to communicate clearly and concisely with people from a wide variety of backgrounds and cultures.

Minimum Requirements

Education: High school diploma or GED. Ability to acquire and maintain IDACS/NCIC (Indiana Data and Communication system/ National Crime Information Center) certification within six months of employment.
