This is administrative work overseeing the drafting and graphic design functions of a cartographic unit.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Sets priorities and assigns tasks to employees; monitors and evaluates work output; reviews finished product to ensure quality and accuracy; serves as resource on technical questions.
Maintains departmental data-bases relating to cartographic operations; updates as necessary; provides expertise to the cartographic production area in the use and integration of geographic information systems (GIS) in the field of cartography.
Maintains files of work requests, employee time records, purchase orders, and other administrative files; receives incoming work from authors and communicates with authors on requests for services.
Calculates and issues monthly billings for work performed for grant projects; maintains monthly list of current job requests.
Prepares maps for digitizing by converting map coordinates to Universal Transverse Mercator digital standards; compiles and drafts lines and symbols.
Prepares and transfers digital output files using standardized formats; creates new formats as needed.
Creates and designs 35 mm slides using computer graphics; consults with authors regarding concepts to be communicated by slides.
Composes maps and cross sections using overlays; produces opaqued negatives and overlay keys for proper registration; prepares film for color separations; typesets labels and text blocks.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of computer aided drafting & design techniques applicable to cartography.
Knowledge of geographical information systems, data base, word processing, and graphics software.
Knowledge of photography, color separation, and graphic printing techniques.
Ability to lead and coordinate the work of catographic technicians of varying skill levels .
Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
Ability to prioritize and manage cartograghic projects.
Education: Associates degree in computer aided design, graphic arts, or related field.
Experience: Two years map production experience.
