This is highly specialized work creating detailed geologic maps, illustrations, and graphic art.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Prepares maps for digitizing by converting map coordinates to universal transverse Mercator digital standards; establishes standards for line weights and symbol placements; compiles or drafts lines and symbols using CAD software.
Creates, manipulates, analyzes, and displays topological geographic data; utilizes geographic information systems (GIS) to create topological and georeferenced databases linked to graphic drawings; designs database and attribute map features into GIS data sets.
Scribes lines of complex geological maps and illustrations on scribecoat film using swivel, rigid, and pin engravers after establishing standard for line weights and placement.
Composes maps, cross-sections, and figures for full color separation; determines the layout, text styles, sizes, and location of graphics and symbols for publication; typesets labels.
Prepares detailed ink drawings of geological maps, cross-sections, charts, and columnar sections; touches up plotted media line work.
Checks final maps and figures for errors.
Completes routine time records for cost accounting of projects; prepares estimates; maintains archive of computer files; organizes and maintains files.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of computer aided drafting & design techniques applicable to cartography.
Knowledge of geographical information systems, data base, word processing, and graphics software.
Knowledge of photography, color separation, and graphic printing techniques.
Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
Ability to exercise independent judgement.
Education: Associates degree in computer aided design, graphic arts, or related field.
Experience: Two years map production experience.
