A position is a specific set of duties and responsibilities assigned to and performed by an individual employee.

A job specification provides a summary of the types of duties and responsibilities that are required of the numerous positions that are within a given job. It also includes the minimum knowledge, skills, abilities, education and experience needed to perform the duties of the positions that are found in the job.

A position description provides a detailed description of the specific duties, responsibilities and required knowledge, skills, abilities, education and experience of a particular position.

Project Plan

The review of Service Jobs university-wide consists of five phases:

Project Timeline (PowerPoint)

Job Specifications

A Working Committee made up of management and human resource representatives from all of the campuses reviewed the Service Jobs university-wide.  They worked with University Human Resources to develop Job Specifications that capture a general description of the overall duties and responsibilities management has assigned to the jobs and the minimum education and experience requirements needed.

Service Staff should speak to their Supervisor or Human Resources Representative if they have questions or comments about the Job Specification for the job that represents their position.

Market Analysis

Indiana University hired a third party consultant, Buck Consultants, to provide an analysis of relevant wage information for Service jobs across all IU campuses.

Position Descriptions

Units are in the process of reviewing current position descriptions and updating those that no longer reflect the primary duties and responsibilities assigned to the position. Service Staff should speak to their Supervisor or Human Resources Representative if they have questions or comments about the Position Description for their position.

Classification and Wage Structure

Buck was also retained to provide guidance on the design of a market-based university-wide wage structure and the classification of jobs into levels. Recommendations are currently being developed.
